We're happy to know that there are now a number of people getting interested to work on gathering evidences re: Rural Communication Services as applied to practical endeavors like family farming. One of my PhD advisees at UP Los Banos, Hassan Mahammad Kamrul, has just completed his dissertation on RCS' role in delivery and adoption of saline-tolerant rice variety in Bangladesh. It has been externally reviewed and soon Kamrul will be happy to post key results of his work. Meantime, we will be capturing some of his significant findings and post them in our FCCM page in the coming days. For others who are currently working on RCS in family farming, we will be happy to hear your experiences. Building up our lessons learned will surely go a long way.

Torres posted a new announcement Comdev global research initiative formed Under the leadership of the University of Queensland (UQ), the Communication for Rural Development and Social Change – Global Research Initiative (GRI) was recently formed to follow up and advance the work in mainstreaming Comdev in rural development earlier initiated by FAO. Aside from UQ, the group is composed of members from FAO, Wageningen University, University of Guelph, University of Reading, and University of the Philippines Los Baños. For 2015, GRI has lined up a number of activities that would bring Comdev in the agenda of development- and communication–related international conferences, meetings and events among others. These include paper presentation in the forthcoming 22 nd European Seminar on Extension and Education (ESEE), April 28-May 1, 2015 in Wageningen, The Netherlands and a panel presentation at the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) conference, July 12-16, 2015, in Montreal, Canada. In terms of research and capacity building, GRI has also identified possible areas of work on the following: map e-learning modules and higher education courses on ComDev; map community for development research and methodologies; field student assistants for such activities and for internships in FAO projects; consider a global PhD course (similar to WASS structure) to be held in Rome in close connection with FAO and the University of Perugia; conduct inventory of shared sources (text books, learning environments); use and actively...

Based on what we have identified as contributions to the strategic initiatives and opportunities for collaboration to promote ComDev and rural communication services, I am pleased to confirm our College's commitment (with the blessing of our dean) to serve as coordinator in hosting the CCComdev platform and dedicated FCCM page. This is among the areas of work listed in the action plan.
Aside from animating and maintaining the regular features/services of CCComdev, we will also be facilitating this FCCM virtual space (fccm.cccomdev.org) that will include on-line discussion to share information and knowledge as well as shape up joint undertakings in line with the action plan.
Likewise, we encourage everyone to be actively involved particularly in policy dialogues concerning ComDev's and community media's role in family farming.
To guide us, we uploaded the FCCM Action Points for the priority areas of work where we can choose to participate. These areas include: FCCM facilitation and advocacy, knowledge sharing and networking, research, capacity development, and support to programmes and countries. This is a list in progress, you may still want to add something. So in line with your respective mandates, we hope you will not miss to be part of this global initiative.

Cleofe S. Torres posted a new discussion Way Forward Designing demand-driven and inclusive rural communication services to advance family farming does not happen in a vacuum. Some preparatory work has to be done to understand the current situation and issues and the various stakeholders who are affected. This stage already requires participatory communication methods and tools that will help generate the needed information/data. Then these information have to be processed systematically so that any communication service that will be designed will be relevant to the farmers' needs and demands. In other words, designing rural communication services including the enabling policies, requires planning. Just like when we build roads, bridges, or a house some plan to guide the work is important so that errors are minimized and resources are used more efficiently. I am happy to share that FAO together with our College of Development Communication in UP Los Banos have come up with a sourcebook on ComDev planning for rural development. It is meant for development workers, communication practitioners, agriculture technicians. The sourcebook has already been introduced and will be uploaded soon in this website. This is also to emphasize that ComDev work is not an arbitrary thing. It also needs to be planned, an activity that too often has been neglected because everybody is so "busy." But lessons will show us that the benefits of a good ComDev plan far outweigh the time invested doing the plan. For example, when the Agriculture...
