Late last week, FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy, welcomed almost 100 guests from all four corners of the world, travelling from afar to attend and participate in the Forum on Communication for Development and Community Media for Family Farming (FCCM). The Forum, organized by FAO in collaboration with AMARC, aimed to showcase and raise awareness on the role of Communication for Development (ComDev) as a driver for innovation as well as family farmers’ participation in rural development.

Learning, sharing, and collaboration in communication for rural development is now possible through web-based global and regional platforms, www.cccomdev.org and www.comdevasia.org, respectively. Aside from the portal, CCComdev also maintains two social media accounts, Twitter and Facebook with followers consisting of Comdev organizations, professional, and graduate and undergraduate students.

Radio coverage of the Forum on Communication for Development and Community Media for Family Farming

The Forum on Communication for Development and Community Media for Family Farming (FCCM) ended late last week. More than 100 participants representing farmer organizations, rural institutions, governments, development agencies, research organizations, NGOs, academia, community media and communication networks came together to share experiences, discussed best practices and come up with a set of firm recommendations for the way forward in the ComDev field.

Second day of FCCM

The FCCM continues its work today October 24, 2014 at the FAO’s Headquarters in Rome. The day’s theme is “towards inclusive rural communication services.” And the session is chaired by Venus Jennings, Programme Specialist at UNESCO. The session was divided in to three panels: Policy and Institutional frameworks; investment and partnerships and capacity development.

Mario Acunzo, FAO’s Communication for Development Officer, reminded participants that these are the three issues on which the FCCM will develop recommendations for the Global Dialogue on Family Farming to be held in the framework of the International Year of Family Farming (IYFF); where global agreements/decisions will be made.

FCCM opens in Rome

“Today there are more than 500 million family farms in the world and this is out of a total of 570 million total farms. So what this means is that 9 out of every 10 farms in the world is run by a family, owned by a family, or using predominantly family labor (…) very importantly what we’ve found North, South, East, West for Family farmers is that they need to have better voice, better participation in policy processes (…) their organizations and they themselves need to take part in the decisions that are going to have an influence on their lives. And this is where you [Communications for Development practitioners] come in…"
