The Forum on Communication for Development and Community Media for Family Farming opened at the Food and Agriculture Organization’s Headquarters, in Rome, Italy, today. Participants met to discuss the role of communication to improve rural development. In his presentation, Francesco Diasio, Acting Secretary General of the World Association of Community Broadcasters, highlighted the recent findings of the regional virtual consultations held by FAO and AMARC in three continents: Asia-Pacific, Latin America and Africa.

Maria Pia Matta, President of World Association of Community Radio Broadcast (AMARC) in her welcome remarks at the Forum on Communication for Development & Community Media for Family Farming (FCCM) taking place at the FAO headquarters in Rome today spoke about the importance of community radio which is essential for the global debate on rural development. She stressed that ‘communication is a right and a necessity in this day and age’ where communication has become ‘a place where social relations can happen’.

A Compendium of virtual consultations

Regional virtual consultations were held, in part, to observe the 2014 International Year of Family Farming (IYFF), and by holding a Forum on Communication for Development & Community Media for Family Farming (FCCM) on 23-24 October 2014 in Rome, Italy. The FCCM aims to showcase the role of Communication for Development (ComDev) as a driver for innovation and family farmers’ participation, bringing together a variety of stakeholders to contribute to the upcoming Global Dialogue on Family Farming on 27-28 October 2014.
